As BP’s gigantic oil disaster in the Gulf continues to destroy the ecosystem and economy of the region, House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio has a typical Republican idea: INCREASE OIL DRILLING!
He’s not alone in his backward-looking lack of leadership… the top congressional recipient of BP-related campaign cash during the last election cycle, Conservative Democrat in Name Only Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana joins the chorus of “drill baby drill” even as America’s ecological Chernobyl worsens.
This, of course, proves once again that Conservatives are devoid of real solutions.
As the inevitable results of their greed-centered policies stare them in the face, the STILL have nothing to offer 95% of the population as they work to run cover for their Corporate sponsors that have turned our government into an appendage of their own affairs.
So wedded to profiteering at any cost, they refuse to adapt – even to save Earth herself!
Brain dead Faux News viewers may buy this disgraceful dance that Boehner and Landrieu are now shuffling to, but normal people know that the these Republican pigs and their Con Democrat in Name Only counterparts are dancing as fast as they can to the corporate fiddle in the hope to secure a lucrative private sector job after they pay their dues turning our nation into a Plutocracy.
These unconscionable Conservative pigs have no real solutions – just half assed theories based in malignant narcissism that, whenever implemented in the least, plunge whole systems into (economic or environmental) collapse.
Along with their old standard “tax cuts for the rich!”, these Cons cry “drill baby drill” like the priests of Easter Island cried, “just build one more Moai and the crops will return!” If we’re not careful, they will “lead” us to suffer the same fate.
In case you are not familiar with that tale, here’s the brief synopsis paraphrased from the Independent UK:
…Easter Island was once a lush, sub-tropical paradise covered in thick forest filled with a rich assortment of wildlife. But the trees and forest animals were long gone by the time Jacob Roggeveen, the Dutch seaman who gave the island its name when he spotted it on Easter Day in 1722, had arrived. The question is why?
In his 2005 book Collapse, author Jared Diamond explains why it was the islanders’ fault. Diamond says they started to build bigger and bigger ceremonial statues (Moai) in an atmosphere of competitive rivalry between the island’s many different clans. To move the statues from the island’s quarry, Rano Raraku, in the south-east, the islanders needed to cut large logs for the construction of long “canoe ladders” to carry the massive carvings to the island’s coast. They also needed heavy ropes made from the fibrous bark of the bigger palms.
“The overall picture for Easter Island is the most extreme example of forest destruction in the Pacific, and among the most extreme in the world: the whole forest gone, and all of its tree species extinct,” says Diamond.
As a result of the deforestation, food production fell dramatically as crops became exposed to the harsh winds and semi-arid conditions of the region. Consequently the population collapsed from perhaps as many as 15,000 at its peak to the few thousand that were eking out a living by the time Roggeveen arrived.
Smallpox and slavery killed off most of the people that remained, but the islanders were on the way to total collapse even without any contact with Europeans, says Diamond.

So.. in other words.. the very thing that was supposed to bring them fortune was what destroyed their civilization.
The story of Easter Island should stand as a warning to us all but, as they are apt to do, Conservatives don’t like the inconvenient truth of a man-made ecocide and have been attempting to blame the collapse solely on rats that were brought to the Island on European ships. They say that with no natural enemy, the rats overran the Island, killing everything.
As we know, complexity is not the Conservative strong suit – especially when they are attempting to weave a metaphor around their pro-corporate agenda. The fact is, as USA Today recently reported, scientists agree that the rats did not help the already collapsing ecosystem set in motion by the insane Easter Island policy of “Build Baby Build” that had already begun to decline well before the Europeans arrived.
So. Here we are again in human history with “leaders” taking us down the path of destruction for the sake of some perceived gain to themselves and their “class” as they kill us all in the process.
Are we going to let them do it to us again?
