For the last two years, Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old high school student from Sweden, has led an effort to organize worldwide walkouts from school to call attention to climate change. On Monday, she used the United Nations climate change summit to give an impassioned call for government intervention to combat the climate crisis.
Greta’s impassioned speech to the summit has to stand as the most inspirational moment of the year. Watch here.
With what has become typical bluntness, Greta said that she shouldn’t even be in New York, but back in school. She was appalled that those in a position to do something are sitting on their hands while coming to her generation for hope. “How dare you!” she snapped.
Greta put the world on notice–she and her fellow teens will be watching to see what they do about climate change–and if they don’t do their jobs, “we will never forgive you.”
Sadly, certain elements of the right aren’t receiving Greta’s message very well. By far the most unhinged response came from veteran right-wing provocateur Dinesh D’Souza, who had the gall to liken Greta to the Hitler Youth.
After Greta’s speech, Michael Knowles of The Daily Wire had the gall to go on Fox News and take a cheap shot at Greta having Asperger’s syndrome, suggesting that liberals were using “a mentally ill Swedish child” as a prop. Watch here.
This was too much even for the fair and balanced network. Fox News officials offered an unreserved apology to Greta, and have all but blackballed Knowles from their airwaves.
It was only a matter of time before someone from Breitbart News joined in on this hatefest. Lo and behold, Breitbart editor-at-large John Nolte saw fit to wade in. He actually claimed–with a straight face–that Greta’s passion isn’t something to be applauded, but may be a sign that she needs an intervention, and fast. No, this isn’t snark.
Excuse me, John? How in the world is Greta’s passionate, plain-speaking style a sign that she may need an intervention? We should want our young people to have even a fraction of the passion she has for the world around her. Apparently it hasn’t occurred to Nolte that most European countries understand that they’re supposed to be training citizens, not just workers. Kids like Greta are the result.
And before you start calling for an intervention for Greta, John, you may want to take a long, hard look at your side. Like CJ Pearson, who not only merrily joined in on the disgraceful slut-shaming of Stormy Daniels, but had no qualms about sitting down for a chat with noxious troll, racist dog whistler, and pedophilia apologist Milo Yiannopoulos. What parent with any kind of love for their son would be okay with their son who not only shows such staggering disrespect for women, but associates with one of the worst people in the world?
And what about a gaggle of seven conservative teens from Kentucky who got the bright idea to “choke” a cutout of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? If there is ever a situation that demands a “break glass” intervention, it would be with high school boys who even think that joking about assaulting a woman is at all okay.
Simply put, Nolte’s moral compass is severely warped. But then again, he works for an outfit where a warped moral compass is part of the job description. This is an outfit that had no qualms whatsoever about working with vicious Nazis and white supremacists in order to normalize hate and bigotry of the worst type. This is an outfit whose executive editor openly admitted that it led a disgraceful smear campaign against Roy Moore’s accusers despite having reason to believe they were credible.
Nolte himself has given us reason to question his moral compass in the past. He actually defended a gaggle of vigilantes who make it their business to publicly humiliate suspected pedophiles on Facebook, even to the point of exposing them to harassment or worse. But suggesting that a 16-year-old girl’s passion for saving the environment is a sign she may need an intervention, while ignoring far more egregious behavior on his own side? That’s pretty low, even for someone writing for Breitbart. It says a lot that this isn’t the lowest blow Greta has faced this week.
