For all the “made in China” American flag lapel pins they wear, conservatives are the true heirs to the British Loyalists, dragging us back to the system where the rich own and run everything and everyone else knows their natural “place.” The very system our Founders fought a revolution to escape.
Similar to today, the Crown, the British aristocracy and their allies in Parliament rigged the laws in favor of the aristocracy and it’s corporate tentacles, regardless of the economic harm inflicted on the average people. Laws were written to allow the East India Company, the world’s first transnational corporation, to import tea to the colonies without paying any tax, thus pricing local tea shops out of the market – an injustice infuriated the colonists.
The anonymous revolutionary known to history as “Rusticus” nailed a pamphlet to posts all over Boston. Titled, “The Alarm,” it was this call to arms against corporate tyranny which eventually materialized into the first globalization protest known as the “Boston Tea Party.”
Rusticus wrote, “Are we in like Manner to be given up to the disposal of the East India Company, who have now the Assurance, to step forth in Aid of the Minister, to execute his Plan, of enslaving America? Their conduct …has given simple proof how little they regard the laws of nations, the rights, liberties, and lives of men. Fifteen hundred thousand, it is said, perished of famine in one year, not because the Earth denied its fruits, but because this company and its servants engulfed all the necessities of life and set them at so high a price that the poor could not purchase them.”
Thom Hartmann wrote in his article detailing the history of the Boston Tea Party, using extensive research of those who participated in it,
“The primary purpose of the Tea Act was to increase the profitability of the East India Company to its stockholders (which included the King and the wealthy elite that kept him secure in power), and to help the Company drive its colonial small-business competitors out of business. Because the Company no longer had to pay high taxes to England and held a monopoly on the tea it sold in the American colonies, it was able to lower its tea prices to undercut the prices of the local importers and the mom-and-pop tea merchants and tea houses in every town in America.
This infuriated the independence-minded American colonists, who were wholly unappreciative of their colonies being used as a profit center for the world’s largest multinational corporation, The East India Company. They resented their small businesses still having to pay the higher, pre-Tea Act taxes without having any say or vote in the matter. (Thus, the cry of ‘no taxation without representation!’) Even in the official British version of the history, the 1773 Tea Act was a ‘legislative maneuver by the British ministry of Lord North to make English tea marketable in America’ with a goal of helping the East India Company quickly ‘sell 17 million pounds of tea stored in England…
…Most Americans today believe that the colonists were only upset that they didn’t have a legislature they’d elected that would pass the laws under which they were taxed: ‘taxation without representation’ was their rallying cry. And while that was true, [George Robert Twelvetrees] Hewes points out, the needle in their side, the pinprick that was really driving their rage, was that England was passing tax laws solely for the benefit of the transnational East India Company corporation, and at the expense of the average American worker and America’s small business owners.
Thus, ‘Taxation without representation’ also meant hitting the average person and small business with taxes, while letting the richest and most powerful corporation in the world off the hook for its taxes. It was government sponsorship of one corporation over all competitors, plain and simple.
Hartmann writes that there was a debate “late that afternoon in Boston… but it was short because a man named Josiah Quiney pointed out that some of the people in the group worked directly or indirectly for the East India Company, or held loyalty to Britain, or both.” Had these corporate spies lived today, the would no doubt be at home at a local teabagger rally and avid watchers of Fox (Faux) News.

Watch Thom Hartmann Tell the Story of the REAL Tea Party Here:
Today we can replace “East India Company” with “Koch Industries” to see that we are up against the same threat to liberty, democracy and freedom our predecessors faced – complete with the sniveling sycophants who would rather be ruled by the rich than help cultivate an egalitarian civilization that operates in the interests of the General Welfare. The same way Teabaggers of today, funded by billionaires, rally to remain at the mercy of the corporate state… during the days of the American Revolution, British Loyalists whined about, derided and sabotaged the colonists when they dared to challenge the rule by the rich status quo.
Plutocracy: A New Despotism Wrapped in the Robes of Legal Sanction
noun, plural plu·toc·ra·cies.
1.the rule or power of wealth or of the wealthy.
2.a government or state in which the wealthy class rules.
3.a class or group ruling, or exercising power or influence, by virtue of its wealth.
We have been here before. In 1936, during the first Republican Great Depression that followed the first Gilded Age, FDR described the plight of the people against the, “…privileged princes of these new economic dynasties, thirsting for power,” who “reached out for control over government itself. They created a new despotism and wrapped it in the robes of legal sanction. In its service new mercenaries sought to regiment the people, their labor, and their property. And as a result the average man once more confronts the problem that faced the Minute Man.”
Roosevelt rightly compared the threat to freedom posed by the new entrenched aristocracy as the latest assault on the experiment in self-governance, birthed in the Liberal Age of Enlightenment, that was constantly under attack by the powerful and privileged few.
The New Deal Created the Middle ClassFDR was a “Traitor to his Class,” Republicans are “Traitors to their Nation”
Despite the non-stop Republican attempt to disparage Roosevelt and the New Deal, it was the bottom-up New Deal policies that created the American Middle Class… and Reagan’s Trickle-Down Revolution that destroyed it. (Read my article: The Last Refuge of Failure is Myth, The Real Ronald Reagan)
Watch Paul Krugman Explain How the New Deal Created the Middle Class:
To the great relief of the those who suffered for years under the Gilded Age policies, and the subsequent generations that benefited from New Deal policies that turned the working poor into an economically-vibrant (and much too “uppity” for the “privileged princes”) working class, FDR was not afraid to openly fight the powerful interests gripping our government. President Obama, on the other hand, frustratingly seemed to incessantly try and convince the privileged princes and their government operatives to “play nice.” This is a delusion. Republicans want power – and will do anything – including commit treason – to get it.
Watch Thom Hartmann Explain the History of Republican Treason – with the Audio Tapes to Prove it:
As Robert Draper revealed in his book,”Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives,” during a four hour, “invitation only” meeting on Jan. 20, 2009, Republicans who were elected to do “the People’s work” met and literally hatched the plot to sabotage, undermine & destroy the U.S. economy as a 2012 election strategy. These greed-centered ideologues made a pact to repeatedly block President Obama’s every attempt to fix CON failures as a way to ensure he would not be re-elected. House members Cantor, Hensarling, Hoekstra, Lungren, McCarthy, Ryan & Sessions…Senate members, Coburn, Corker, DeMint, Ensign & Kyl… conspired with unelected Newt Gingrich & Repug strategist Frank Luntz to bring the government to a screeching halt and harm the American People for political gain.
So here we are standing at a crossroads in a New Gilded Age, struggling again, with whom FDR called,
“…the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.”
Strong words – which he followed by the action of promoting the General, above the Corporate Welfare.
A man born into privilege, FDR was called a “traitor to his class” for his efforts to commit the offense of empowering working people. On the other hand, born into a struggling working class family, with his chronic capitulation and back-room bankster deals, President Obama may be, at times, a “traitor to his class,” but he is no FDR. He’s not going to stand up to the powerful forces that have now officially turned the government into an appendage to their affairs. He’s operating in the corrupt system and thus cannot bite the hand that feeds him. He needed to rally the troops on day one – take to the bully pulpit and expose the Republican Plutocracy machine as his predecessors did. He didn’t because he’s not the “socialist” the Republican lie machine pretends he is. He’s not even a liberal. Never was. Look at his record.
But many will argue that FDR did not have to contend with unlimited, unfettered, unprecedented financial bribes being poured into the system as President Obama does. But neither does he expose it. Still, banksters whine about peoples’ negative perception of them and attack President Obama as bent on “destroying Capitalism” while corporations enjoy record profits and pay little or no taxes for the privilege of riding us all to the bank.
Money is the rot in the system. No doubt about it, we must excise the corrosive influence of money out of the system… but our system may be too far-gone to right itself without a complete reboot.
Wisconsin: Labor Didn’t Lose, Money Won
Right now, all over the web, Scott Walker sycophants are gloating over a “victory” that would not have happened without the unprecedented levels of cash from the handful of billionaires who don’t even live in Wisconsin. Far from a defeat of Labor, as the meme Reich Wingers have promoted and the headlines have screamed, the Walker recall attempt was a victory for the privileged princes of the new economic dynasties who will lie, cheat (voter purge, anyone?) and do whatever it takes to subjugate the people.
Right now, billionaires and their Fascist Roberts’ Supreme Court-enabled front group “super PACS” are blanketing America from sea to shining sea with advertisements that are nothing less than bald-faced lies. For example, as Robert Reich wrote in his piece, “The Big-Lie Coup d’Etat,”
“The narrator in the ad Crossroads GPS is launching solemnly intones: “In 2008, Barack Obama said, ‘We can’t mortgage our children’s future on a mountain of debt.’ Now he’s adding $4 billion in debt every day, borrowing from China for his spending. Every second, growing our debt faster than our economy,” he continues. “Tell Obama, stop the spending.”
This is a bald-faced lie, by the way.
Obama isn’t adding to the debt every day. The debt is growing because of obligations entered into long ago, many under George W. Bush — including two giant tax cuts that went mostly to the very wealthy that were supposed to be temporary and which are still going, courtesy of Republican blackmail over raising the debt limit.
In realty, government spending as a portion of GDP keeps dropping.
As I said, I don’t know who’s financing this big lie but there’s good reason to think it’s some combination of Wall Street, big corporations, and the billionaire Koch brothers.
According to the reliable inside-Washington source Politico, the Koch brothers’ network alone will be spending $400 million over the next six months trying to defeat Obama, which is more than Senator John McCain spent on his entire 2008 campaign.
Thanks to the Fascist Robert’s Supreme Court Money, has corrupted our democracy and put the General Welfare at the mercy of the privileged princes whose only concern is the furtherance of their power and profit….
…Its technique is to inundate America with a few big lies, told over and over (the debt is Obama’s fault and it’s out of control; corporations and the very rich are the “job creators” that need tax cuts; government is the enemy, and its regulations are strangling the private sector; unions are bad; and so on), and tell them so often they’re taken as fact.
Then having convinced enough Americans that these lies are true, take over the White House, Congress, and remaining states that haven’t yet succumbed to the regressive right (witness Tuesday’s recall election in Wisconsin).
I desperately hope I’m wrong, but there’s growing evidence I may be right.”

The Alarm… 21st Century Style
Just like a sick mind cannot fix a sick mind… this sick system will not consciously right itself. It must be forced to do so by the overwhelming power of the people… those who don’t identify with their oppressors on the promise that…say… gays will be prevented from forming a legal contract. You know… those conscious of history, reality and who know that what Justice Louis Brandies warned decades ago is now as much a call to action as Rusticus’ pamphlet was.
As Brandies said, “We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.”
It’s official. The government of the United States is a mere appendage to the affairs of billionaires. The only thing that will rectify it is massive, non-violent, civil disobedience and resistance. That day MUST come… or the American experiment is done.
